As someone who grew up dreading dental visits, I understand those fears on a personal level.

As a child, my own dental experiences were filled with fear. I remember being told to keep opening wide, that it would be done soon — but 'soon' stretched into long, painful appointments where my feelings were dismissed. I wasn’t given a voice, and that stuck with me.

That’s exactly why I created LuminouSmiles — a dental hygiene clinic in NW Calgary that puts you first. We’re here to rewrite the dental experience, especially for clients who feel anxious or unsure. After my terrifying experiences as a child and no accessibility due to cost, I avoided dentistry unless something was bothering me. My next dental visit was almost 7 years after my last visit!

When I got into dental hygiene school, I was so embarrassed to open my mouth in front of colleagues and instructors that I paid $600 out of pocket to get a cleaning before our student clinic even started. I was only 17 — and that $600 came straight out of my savings.

Because it had been so long, I actually needed multiple visits, but I couldn’t afford to do them all privately. So, I bit the bullet and let my classmate clean my teeth in the school clinic. I felt the urge to make excuses for my oral hygiene condition.

Thankfully, my colleague and professors treated me with compassion and respect — and I’ll never forget that feeling. It’s a big part of why I created LuminouSmiles: to offer the same understanding, dignity, and care to others who’ve been in my shoes.
